“Bra Drive” Promotes HIV/AIDS Awareness
Most clothing in rural Ghana is handmade. Though bras are available in some markets, they are expensive and many women go without the luxury of owning one. Before her trip to Ghana this summer, Andrea, (FLO Ghana’s executive director) decided to ask her fellow teachers if they had any bras they were willing to donate. At the same time Shelley, (FLO Ghana’s vice president) did the same. Little did they know just how generous the ladies of Western Massachusetts would be when it came to donating bras. With the help of some local salons and friends, the girls were soon swimming in a sea of over 600 bras!
Instead of simply handing them out, the girls decided to promote much-needed awareness of HIV/AIDS while giving out the bras. Their hope was to provide free bras to anyone willing to have an HIV/AIDS tests. Unfortunately, they were unable to raise enough funds in time to cover the expenses of the HIV/AIDS tests. Instead the girls will set up a booth at a weekly market in Kpando, a rural town in Ghana. At the booth the girls will dispense condoms and brochures describing ways to prevent contracting and spreading the HIV virus while local women pick out a free bra or two to take home with them.
To all those who made donations to our recent bra drive…
Thank You!
Because of donations like yours, the FUTURE LEADERS OF GHANA PROGRAM was able to bring over 900 bras with them to Ghana, West Africa this past July.
They were distributed at clinics which taught women about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. Thanks to all of the donated bras we were able to put a positive spin on a serious subject and had a great turnout!
